So, you're posting online with little inbound leads and cold calls/emails don't work... a lot of the time.
I know how you feel.
In this post, I will explain how I utilise social media to bring in new business as a videographer.
Understand your platforms
I do not use every social media platform available. Why? Because I do not have the time to manage them all! I'm a one-man band and managing your socials is:
Ideation
Research
Writing
Scheduling
Content creation
Posting
Engaging
Consistency
Quality And more...
X these aspects by 4 and you've got a full-time job on your hands.
So, to know where you should be posting you need to understand:
How much time you have available for social media
Which platforms will be the most effective for your business
What kind of content you want to post and should be posting
Which platforms do I use and why?
Instagram - YES!
I love Instagram for one reason. It's a great way to showcase my work and is all about VISUALS. This makes my brain happy.
I treat my Instagram feed like it's my portfolio.
If someone clicks on my page I want them to instantly understand what myself and my brand are all about.
For me, this means I don't post too much personal content on my Instagram page, but I do post personal content on Instagram stories, attracting audiences via my personality and voyeurism into my life and business.
TikTok - YES!
TikTok is where I get personal and a bit more... carefree. I worry less about everything looking perfect.
TikTok for me is about posting frequently, having personality, and sharing valuable/educational content. You want people to engage with you!
The way to do that is to give people something to talk about.
This then (hopefully) leads them to either my Instagram or website where they can see a bit more of the professional side of life, perhaps inviting them to message me because they A) feel like i'm approachable from my content and B) Also understand the calibre of my work from my posts and linked pages.
Facebook - NO!
Quite frankly, I do not have time for every platform and one had to go.
I chose Facebook because I don't use it, and neither do a lot of people I know.
And a lot of brands that do post here, usually just cross-post from Instagram anyway!
Whilst a community does exist there that could be potential clients (think business owners, local community pages or networking groups etc), it felt like the place most unrelated to my business and its operations.
I would probably use Facebook if I was targeting older audiences, and it is a potential space to put paid ad campaigns.
One day, I may use Facebook, but for now, I am more happy reducing the pressure of social media where I can afford to.
LinkedIn - YES
If you are a videographer or business owner and you are not on Linkedin
You're a buffoon.
LinkedIn is a strange place where you navigate corporate jargon daily, watching people spew b****cks advice and copy content for likes and reach.
But this is why you need to build your network carefully!
With the right network, LinkedIn is a pleasure to be a part of and a goldmine for potential work.
Strangers lift up strangers, business advice is readily available along with useful conversations and the potential to go viral is available.
On LinkedIn, I focus on these things:
Sharing my personality (along with my face)
Sharing valuable advice in my industry
Updating my network about what I'm up to
Comment on posts as much as possible
Connect with likeminded individuals or those who are going to add value to my network
Message or engage with people I'd like to work with
As long as you post frequently, invite people to engage with you and share a blend of valuable content and personality, you will feel the benefits of this platform.
People will reach out to you.
And they won't mind if you reach out to them, it's what it's all about.
How does this bring in new business?
This way of marketing is organic.
I've had jobs come from simply liking a reel on Instagram.
Don't underestimate the small actions.
Not everyone is converted to leads or sales by the same things.
Some people will enquire because they love the calibre of your work.
Some will enquire because yes, they saw your work, but really they want to work with someone who has a certain personality and they found your TikTok.
What should you do now?
Using every social media platform the same way is boring, uninspiring and unsuccessful.
Evaluate what you're currently doing on your social media channels. Are you utilising them to their full potential?
If you don't try, you'll never know.
