Freelance VS Entrepreneurship: Starting Out As a Female Videographer

How to choose between freelancing or starting a company as a videographer and where the lines blur?

As I embarked on my journey into self-employment, I found myself at a crossroads - to freelance under my name or to create something more significant.

It was a choice that led me down a path to founding Mera Creative Studios.

Freelancing was the obvious option.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel like I'm basically still doing that - I’m currently a one-man band with a vision, working from project to project to get there.

The only difference was, I'd be shaping my creative journey with my name in lights.

I loathed the idea of being ‘Amber Wright - videographer’, ‘Amber Wright Media’ or ‘Amber Wright Videography’ - It works for a lot of people but… I just couldn’t get on board with it.

Through my experience running an art business, I am lucky enough to have experience here. As ‘Bambidesigns’ I was allowed to create a separation from the business, both physically and mentally. Realising that I could choose similarly here was incredibly appealing to me.

But there’s more to it than that. In this industry I have always felt like... the odd one out, working in quite a traditionally male environment. My femininity has been a powerful force in this venture, driving empathy, intuition, and a unique perspective that has enriched my creative process.

In the end, the choice to start Mera Creative Studios rather than just freelancing under my name was about making a statement. It was about shaping the narrative, building a community, and pursuing a dream that was greater than me. As a female videographer, I feel I have a responsibility to do more and provide more representation for people like my younger self.

My Advice

So my advice to you if you are entering the world of self-employment is, to consider your personality, your goals and your vision.

Do you find it easy to step away from work? If not, perhaps operating under a company name will help you as it does me.

Do you like your own name? Seems like a silly question but if you don't like your name then the likelihood is, that you will find branding yourself very difficult.

What are your goals for the future? If you like the idea of hiring someone down the line, perhaps a company is a better option. Allow room for growth!

As I look back on this journey, I'm grateful for every twist and turn, and I'm excited for the adventures that lie ahead :)
